Applications and Scholarship Application Recommendation Forms will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.

Undergraduate/graduate professional education applicants must be sponsored by a full-time member of the Athletic Training Education Program Faculty or by a full-time member of the Athletic Training Staff. Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainers may not be a sponsor.

Graduate (Post Professional LAT) applicants who are affiliated with an Athletic Training Education Program or an athletics department must be sponsored by a full-time member of the Athletic Training Education Program Faculty or by a full-time member of the Athletic Training Staff.  Graduate applicants who are not affiliated with an Athletic Training Education Program or an athletics department must be sponsored by a certified athletic trainer.

The candidate must have two completed Scholarship Application Recommendation forms - one from the applicant sponsor and one from another individual (i.e., a teaching faculty member at the applicant's institution (inside or outside of the athletic training education program), a member of the athletic training staff at the institution, or by an off-campus clinical instructor.).  The candidate must have at least one recommendation addressing academics and at least one recommendation addressing clinical education.  A recommender can address both academics and clinical education.


Robert “Bob” Behnke

Retired after 39 years of teaching anatomy, kinesiology, physical education, and athletic training courses, Bob has been honored on several occasions for excellence in teaching — including receiving the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Educator of the Year award (1987) and the NATA Service Award (1989). During his 11-year tenure as chair of the NATA Professional Education Committee, he initiated the petition to the American Medical Association that led to the national accreditation process for entry level athletic training education programs. Most of Bob’s career was spent at Indiana State University, where he was a full professor of physical education and athletic training and director of undergraduate and graduate athletic training programs. He was an athletic trainer at the 1983 World University Games and for the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball trials in 1984. During sabbaticals in 1982 and 1989, he served as an athletic trainer for boxing, men’s field hockey, team handball, ice skating, roller hockey, gymnastics, judo, and cycling at the United States Olympic Training Center. Bob served as District Four Director (1980 to 1983) and is a NATA Hall of Fame member (1990).


Dwayne “Spike” Dixon

Dwayne “Spike” Dixon was a fixture for 26 years in Indiana University’s athletic training department beginning in 1946. In 1961 he began to focus on teaching athletic training skills and developing curricula. In addition to his lectures, classes, consulting and athletic training duties, Spike wrote “The Dictionary of Training Techniques.” He is credited as the first athletic trainer to use cryotherapy in 1952. He also provided athletic training services to many special groups, including the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Olympic Team and the Indiana North-South All-Star Football Games. Spike served as District Four Director (1954 – 1955) and is a NATA Hall of Fame member (1970).


John Schrader

John Schrader earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, master’s degree from the University of Washington and an HSD from Indiana University. In 1977, John became the coordinator of the Indiana University Athletic Training Education program. He later became the Graduate Athletic Training Program Director and Associate Chair of the Kinesiology Department. John is a national leader in education and research in the field of athletic training. He has served the athletic training profession by chairing many committees. John co-chaired the NATA educational task force group that was instrumental in educational reform. He has served in many leadership roles on the state, district and national levels including President of GLATA (1984 – 87) and member of the NATA Board of Directors (1988 – 92) having served as Vice-President of the board from 1990 – 91. John has received numerous awards for his service to his community and athletic training profession. He was named Sagamore of the Wabash in 1991 by Governor Robert Orr. John is a member of the NATA Hall of Fame (1998).
