IATA Timeline of Events1984 The IATA is incorporated/established as an association on May 21, 1984. William “Pinky” Newell passes away. David Craig becomes the first president. The IATA has 106 members, including 62 certified athletic trainers (ATs). 1985 IATA seeks to create a licensure bill and a state representative to sponsor the bill in legislation. After undergoing setbacks, a “faculty-trainer” bill is proposed jointly with the Indiana State Department of Education to have a state certification requirement for anyone working as an athletic trainer or calling themselves an athletic trainer. IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Merrillville. IATA hosts first Fall Meeting at Butler University. IATA has 147 NATA members. 1986 A survey of Indiana high schools is taken to learn more about schools that are being serviced by a certified athletic trainer. 297 out of 390 schools report. Only 11.2% have AT coverage. Ralph Reiff (2nd President). 1987 Indianapolis hosts Pan American Games. Athletic Trainers from around the state volunteer to provide athletic training services. Athletic Trainers Marje Albohm and Jay Bradley coordinate medical care services for the athletes. Faculty-Trainer Bill is passed by the House but read in the Senate. IATA has 200 NATA members. 1988 IATA releases a position statement on improving health care in high schools. IATA hosts the GLATA Winter Meeting in Indianapolis. Jack Mansfield (3rd President). 1989 IATA participates in anti-steroid seminar at Pike High School. Athletic Trainer Hunter Smith (Indianapolis Colts) represents IATA. IATA has 207 members (112 certified). 1990 IATA newsletter is approved to be professionally published four times a year. Mike Ferrara is first editor. Active Ankle is the first sole sponsor. The first fall IATA Meeting and Educational Symposium is held in October. William “Pinky” Newell is honored as the IATA’s first Hall of Fame member inducted. Medco becomes the first corporate sponsor of the IATA Hall of Fame Banquet. IATA hosts NATA National Meeting and Clinical Symposium in Indianapolis. Dick Harris, former senator from Evansville, is hired to serve as the IATA’s lobbyist. Steve Risinger (4th President). IATA has 366 NATA members. 1991 Mel Blickenstaff, Robert Kerns, and Jim Morris are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 241 members (139 certified). 1992 IATA first summer golf outing for athletic trainers is organized by Rick Shaw and Mark Lahr. This event later becomes an annual fundraiser in conjunction with the IATA Summer Meetings. 1993 Licensure Bill, SB 174, is authored by Senator Greg Server (R-Evansville) with supported authorship from Senator Bill McCarty (D-Anderson) passes in the House and Senate and is signed into law on March 21st. The practice act (certification) for athletic trainers becomes effective July 31st. Athletic Training Licensing Board is formed. Jim Dickerson, Sayers “Bud” Miller, and Marjorie Albohm are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 353 members (223 certified). 1994 The first IATA organizational strategic planning session takes place and is led by Glen Snow. The direction for many future programs and initiatives for the Association are put in motion. Gene Paszkiet and Rod Moore are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Mike Ferrara (6th President). IATA has 417 members (227 certified). 1995 Katie Grove is the first woman to be appointed by the NATA Board of Directors to serve as chairperson to the Women in Athletic Training Task Force/Committee. Marje Albohm is the first woman IATA member to receive the NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Fort Wayne. IATA hosts NATA National Meeting and Clinical Symposium in Indianapolis. Howard Catt, David Craig, and Glen Snow are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Rick Shaw (7th President). IATA has 441 members (302 certified). 1996 IATA hosts first Summer Meeting and Clinical Symposium at Brown County Inn. IUPUI wins the first IATA College Quiz Bowl. Steve Risinger and John Schrader are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.IATA has 441 members (302 certified). 1997 IATA establishes the “IATA Board of Associates” to develop a networking resource with influential Hoosiers. Sue Moore, IATA member, in an effort to help the IATA’s Government Affairs initiatives, develops a Power Point presentation on the Why’s of Athletic Training, a brief history of the profession and specific messages relating to different area of athletic training. First research grants are made available to athletic trainers employed or attending school in Indiana. Dennis Miller is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 491 members (348 certified). 1998 State Licensure bill (HB 1221) is signed into law by Governor Frank O’Bannon. Language changes from Certified to Licensed Athletic Trainer. IATA joins with the IHSAA and ISMA’s Sports Medicine Commission to support the first “Sports Medicine Handbook for Indiana Physicians and Athletic Trainers” publication. Kathy Malone is editor.IATA hosts first IATA night at Victory Field (Indianapolis Indians). Sherman Izsak, Jack Mansfield, and Jim Routhier are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Walter “Kip” Smith (8th President). 1999 Political Action Committee (PAC) is established. Kent Evans is appointed chair. Mel Blickenstaff, a founding father of the athletic training profession, passes away. Marje Albohm is first woman to receive the NATA Tim Kerin Award. KWK is registered as the IATA’s lobbyist group. Lou Belch is hired as lobbyist. IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Indianapolis. Ralph Reiff and Robert J. Shriner, Jr. are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 560 members (401 certified). 2000 SB 401 passes making technical amendments to the athletic trainer’s “Scope of Practice” making it a true licensure law. Sue Finkam becomes the first to serve as chairperson of the NATA Clinical Industrial Committee. NATA launches first National Athletic Training Month (March). Walter “Kip” Smith, Marion Vruggink, and Jay Bradley are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Katie Grove (9th President). IATA has 611 members (445 certified). 2001 First electronic newsletter sent to membership called “ENews.” Governor Frank O’Bannon and Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson proclaim March is “National Athletic Training Month.” John Coddington and John Whitmer are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 626 members (451 certified). 2002 First online registration for IATA state meeting offered. Rick Shaw is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Joe Harvey (10th President). IATA has 905 members (647 certified). 2003 IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Evansville. Catherine Grove is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 910 members (666 certified). 2004 The History and Archives Committee, chaired by Bill Kinsey, publishes supplementary History of the IATA booklet and CD (1999-2004). Joe Harvey is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Ned Shannon (11th President). IATA has 938 members (690 certified). 2005 IATA hosts NATA National Meeting and Clinical Symposium in Indianapolis. Kathy Taylor Remsburg is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 997 members (825 certified). 2006 The groundwork for HEA 1467 is started under the leadership of Paul Plummer and Sue Finkam. This bill will create opportunities for licensed athletic trainers to receive reimbursement from accident and sickness insurers and health maintenance organizations. Paul Plummer (12th President). IATA has 1004 members (819 certified). 2007 Edward “Hunter” Smith and Larry Leverenz are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 992 members (805 certified). 2008 The Corydon Group is registered as the IATA’s lobbyist group. Lou Belch becomes President of the Health Care Practice Group division. Undergraduate “Spike Dixon Scholarship” and “Mel Blickenstaff Scholarship” and graduate “John Schrader Scholarship” are awarded.Angie Miller is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.Craig Voll (13th President).IATA has 997 members (797 certified).2009 IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Fort Wayne. First year IATA awards 2 high school scholarships.IATA forms a legislative task force of individuals who could work closely together to monitor the HEA 1467 bill (Craig Voll, Paul Plummer, John Locke, Scott Lawrance, Walter “Kip” Smith, Rick Shaw, and Clark Simpson).Thomas Weidner and Mark Lahr are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.IATA has 1030 members (785 certified).2010 IATA History and Archives Committee begins the process of formally archiving the IATA’s history collection.IATA makes the decision to pursue legislative action (HEA 1467) after two years of ongoing relationship building and education with legislators and insurance companies. Barbara Hallett Caton and Bernie Stento are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.John Locke (14th President).IATA has 1055 members (805 certified).2011 HEA 1467 is signed into law by Governor Mitch Daniels which will create opportunities for licensed athletic trainers to receive reimbursement from accident and sickness insurers and health maintenance organizations. Linda Kaminskis and Ned Shannon are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.IATA has 1112 members (820 certified).2012 IATA collaborates efforts with Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Indiana Department of Education (DOE) to develop education materials in response to the new Indiana Concussion Law. Young Professionals Committee is formed.IATA Diversity Award is created to recognize members working to improve diversity within the profession.The IATA Distinguished Service Award is renamed in memory of the IATA’s 10th President to the Joe A. Harvey Distinguished Service Award.Connie Pumpelly and Kathy Malone Sparks are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.Scott Lawrance (15th President).IATA has 1250 members (881 certified).2013 IATA hosts a night at an Indiana Pacers game in March to celebrate National Athletic Training Month. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team is formed.IATA is one of three state associations selected to participate in the NATA Third-party Reimbursement Pilot Program.Tony Cox and Paul Plummer are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame.IATA has 1377 members (952 certified).2014 House Enrollment Act (HEA) 1290 is signed into law by Governor Mike Pence adding athletic trainers to the definition of “health care provider.” IATA hosts NATA National Meeting and Clinical Symposium in Indianapolis. The History of the Indiana Athletic Trainers’ Association book, written by the History and Archives Committee is published in celebration of the IATA’s 30th Anniversary. Lauber are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA has 1108 members.2020 Robert E. Black, Janet M. Clifton-Gaw, and Jim Miller are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Clevenger are inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. Adam Thompson (20th President). IATA has 1216 members.2023 House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1647 is signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb creating a modernized “Scope of Practice/Practice Act” for athletic trainers. It clarifies the expanded setting of AT practice, updates the definition of athletic training to align with current standards of practice, provides detail to the level of supervision required of ATs, and replaces outdated references in sections of Indiana Code related to clinical standards, certification, and academic programs related to ATs. Jeffrey Fransiosi is inducted into the IATA Hall of Fame. IATA hosts NATA National Meeting and Clinical Symposium in Indianapolis. IATA has 1194 members.2024 IATA celebrates 40th Anniversary as an association! Lafayette Journal and Courier runs a front-page article highlighting Harry Clark the first African American Athletic Trainer.
